“Emotion Through Interaction” at ZON

For those who don’t know ZON, it is one of the biggest players in portuguese Pay TV and Internet providers. They have this internal monthly event called “ZON Web Talks” where people from other companies or business fields are invited to give a speech. This event have a particular agenda, with only two talks the subjects have to be one technical and the other inspirational/creative.

I was invited for the 3rd edition and I’m very grateful to Hugo Silva for the invitation. The event took place today in the ZON’s new building at Campo Grande – Lisboa and the venue was very cool, very light-hearted and informal.

The first talk was taken by Ricardo Nascimento, a Project Manager at InnoWave Technologies. It was about “Using Agile SCRUM in IT projects” and it was really good. I’m a big supporter of Agile SCRUM principles.

I had the inspirational slot, and the reception was great. I went with a purpose, to start some short circuits in attendees’ brains…and the attendees went into the right mood.

I tried to show why playing is so damn important, why being a grown up don’t have to be boring and bottom line, when anyone is happy and playing, their creative side – yes, each and everyone can be creative – will bring crazy ideas. Afterall, we were young and kiddos before so we just need to remember how we felt and what we did…and start doing it again in life and in work.

I had a blast and would love to thank Hugo Silva for the invitation and for all organization…and of course to every attendee, each smile, each raised eyebrows, each interaction … that’s why I do this. A big thank you ZON, hope to see you all another time.

Rebirth of this thing called blog

Hi everyone, long time no see. It’s been awhile since I visited my own blog, actually I did considered to terminate its life. The portuguese market for creative computing is not in the best shape, and even for Flash and ActionScript3 gigs in Portugal the future isn’t very pleasant.
I used the past year to see where the portuguese market did shifted, and the answer is HTML with JavaScript. Yes, you read it right, I’m talking about the good old HTML and not the “new kid on the block” HTML5. Nowadays every web agency wants some HTML5 work, when in fact they are just talking about some JavaScript animation or something similar.
Fortunately for me, I was always a technologic agnostic. I worked with technologies like Adobe Flash almost since its conception, from the good old Macromedia; I did use HTML, CSS and JavaScript when it was mandatory and even Microsoft Silverlight that was good enough for Microsoft to learn what to do for Windows8 etc etc.
When Apple made the decision to not allow the Flash plugin inside iphone or ipad there was a great commotion – what now?
Then Adobe made the call and Flash took a huge turn and pointed the batteries for Game Development. Actually is a damn good call !! Flash is getting stronger and stronger.
But what now for this microsystem called Web? Well folks, the good old HTML with a big facelift is here to stay, even if everybody knows that the standards for HTML5 will only be fully deployed in 2022 !!
Therefore with more harm or less, people have to build the same similar websites that everybody used to build with Flash, but now with JavaScript. Is it a big pain in the butt?
Sure it is but Adobe is releasing a new set of tools to help on that issue.
But fear not, the future is always bright…after all it is only technology, the brain power is your top-most tool! So, bring it on….WebDesign and WebDevelopment will always thrive no matter what you code and I will keep on blogging about this subject.

‘Summer Tech Refresh’ evento na Microsoft

Vai-se realizar no próximo dia 10 de Agosto, pelas 18h30 o evento “Summer Tech Refresh” nas instalações da Microsoft Portugal.

Segundo os próprios:

Workshop de Introducao ao Processing

Vou realizar um workshop de “Introdução à Computação e Arte Generativa com Processing” nos dias 21, 22, 23, 24 de Junho na CoWork – LXFactory, com horário pós-laboral (19h-22h).

Mas o que é “Arte Generativa”?

Refere-se a todas as peças geradas, compostas ou construídas com a utilização de algoritmos computacionais, ou seja, com a utilização de algoritmos matemáticos ou mecânicos, ou somente com processos aleatórios e autónomos”.

O “Processing” nasceu um pouco com este conceito em mente, pois os seus criadores – Ben Fry e Casea Reys – enquanto alunos de doutoramento no MIT sob orientação do famoso designer John Maeda, elaboraram uma linguagem de programação baseada em JAVA mas que estivesse simplificada para o que eles designaram por “Creative Code” – desenhar e utilizar formas, imagens, vídeo, som, interactividade. Esta simplificação, que em linguagem informática se designa por “abstracção”, veio abrir as portas à utilização dos computadores por parte de criativos e artistas.

De acordo com a grande máxima dos criadores do Processing, o workshop será totalmente prático. Desta forma, todos os participantes começarão do mesmo ponto de partida mas terão oportunidade para experimentar e percorrer caminhos diferentes.

Workshops na Escola Superior de Comunicacao Social de Lisboa

A Escola Superior de Comunicação Social (ESCS) lecciona Licenciaturas e Mestrados ligados a Comunicação. Um dos cursos oferecidos é a licenciatura em Multimédia e Audiovisuais, bem como o respectivo mestrado em Multimédia e Audiovisuais.

Na tentativa de continuar a oferecer ferramentas aos seus alunos para se destacarem no mercado, a ESCS desenvolveu um conjunto de workshops – Workshops PlugIn – que estão à mão dos alunos internos da escola a preços muitíssimo convidativos. É de notar que estes workshops também estão disponíveis para alunos externos, com uma pequena flutuação no valor dos mesmos.

A primeira vaga de workshops realizar-se-á durante a pausa escolar da Páscoa e as inscrições já estão abertas.

The Lisbons College of Social Communication (ESCS) has B.Sc. and M.Sc. related with communication. One of those degrees goes into Multimedia and Audiovisuals.

In an attempt to continue to offer tools to their students to excel in the market, ESCS developed a series of workshops – “Workshops PlugIn” -that are right in the corner for the school students at very inviting prices. Note that these workshops are also available for external students, with a small fluctuation in the value thereof.

The first wave will be in the Eastern break and the registations are available already.

Tutoriais

Já há imenso tempo que ando a pensar em escrever alguns tutoriais aqui no blog, aliás já escrevi alguns relacionados com Arduino, sendo que esses que escrevi foram com o intuito de ter documentação para uso próprio.

No entanto, gostaria imenso de saber a vossa opinião sobre o que escrever, sendo que os temas versarão Arduino, Processing, OpenFrameworks, VVVV e PureData.

Têm alguma questão/dúvida que não estejam a conseguir resolver? Partilhem-na comigo e quem sabe se consiga encontrar a solução para que todos juntos possamos aprender mais sobre estas tecnologias tão interessantes!!

Rescaldo do 1º Workshop de Introducao ao Arduino

O 1º workshop de Introdução à Computação Física com Arduino não poderia ter decorrido melhor. Foram 4 noites muito bem passadas com um grupo de formandos divertidissimos.

Na primeiro dia tiveram de me aturar com alguma carga teórica sobre electricidade, electrónica e o microcontrolador Arduino…mas no momento em que começaram a colocar LEDs a piscar e a perceber o que poderá ser construido apartir de algo tão simples como um LED RGB, ou 2 moedas, ou um fecho eclair, ou … ou … Neste momento sei de fonte segura que alguns dos participantes já estão a desenvolver pequenos projectos em casa.

A experiência foi sem dúvida um sucesso e ir-se-á repetir nos próximos dias 7 e 8 de Maio. A “Creative Workshops” está em vias de se tornar uma marca registada e nos planos encontram-se alguns workshops, sempre com temáticas e softwares para creativos e artistas como o Processing, OpenFrameworks, PureData e VVVV.

My 1st workshop on “Introdution to Physical Computing with Arduino” was a success. Four nights really well spent with a bounch of creative and funny people.

In the first day I had to lecture alot about electronics 101, electricity 101 and Arduino 101…but when they started to understand how something damn simple like a blinking LED works, I saw a lot of smiles. I actually know that some of the attendees are already building small projects at home.

One of the attendees took some photos and was kind enough to share it with us:

In the last day we had a visit from a good friend of mine, how actually is helping me alot in this “Creative Workshops” projecto of mine. He asked permission and took some footage and the result is the small video above.

This experiment was definitelly a success and I will do a recap next 7 and 8 of May. “Creative Workshops” is in middle of becoming an official trademark and I already have plans for some more workshops with Processing, OpenFrameworks, PureData and VVVV.

New Portuguese Adobe Community

Nasceu, sensivelmente no mês passado, uma nova comunidade da Adobe – “Web, Graphic & InteractionDesign“.

As boas vindas por parte dos managers dita o seguinte:

“É com enorme prazer que anuncio a criação de um novo Grupo da Adobe, queremos ser uma referência a nível nacional em Web Design, Design Gráfico, Interaction Design (IxD), User Experience (Ux), explorando variadíssimas ferramentas da Adobe como o Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks, Ilustrator, Flash, etc., abordando linguagens como o HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, JQuery, Jquery Mobile, etc., e desenvolvimento multi-plataformas e multi-screen (PC’s, Portateis, Tablets, Smartphones, etc. independentemente do Sistema Operativo).” (fonte: WDIG site)

Pelo que me foi dado a perceber, não existe rivalidade entre os vários grupos da Adobe em Portugal – AUGPT e AUG-PORTO e agora este novo WGID. Acontece que o primeiro Adobe User Group nasceu com uma associação à comunidade “RIAPT – Rich Internet Applications Portugal”, e como tal toda a sua evolução esteve muito focada no desenvolvimento de RIAs. Muito se falou de como se levar pessoal “mais criativo” até aos eventos do AUG, mas os temas técnicos abordados costumam ser um tanto ou quanto “hardcores” e o esforço esfuma-se.

Esperemos que este novo UserGroup, mais focado para a componente visual, UI, design, IxD, UX etc etc etc consiga captar maior atenção entre os criativos de Portugal.

Last month, a new Adobe Community was born – “Web, Graphic & InteractionDesign“.

Their managers welcome goes as follows:

“It is with great joy that we announce the new Adobe Group, we want to be a national reference concerning Web Design, Graphical Design, Interaction Design (IxD), User Experience (Ux), using a broad variety of Adobe tools like Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Fireworks, Ilustrator, Flash, etc., ranging from HTML5, CSS3, Javascript, JQuery, Jquery Mobile, etc., and developing for multi-platforms and multi-screens (PC’s, Laptops, Tablets, Smartphones, etc. independently of Operating System).” (source: WDIG site)

What I have been told, there is no rivalry between the several portuguese Adobe User Groups – AUGPT, AUG-Oporto and the new WGID. It seems that the first AUG was born with a strong association with “RIAPT – Rich Internet Applications Portugal”, therefore the main focus was RIA development. Much was debated about how to call for more creative people into the AUGPT community, but the technical and geeky themes that the group talks about scares all those guys.

Hopefully this new UserGroup with a more visual focus may reach that goal.

O Workshop de Introdução à Computação Física com Arduino está a decorrer, no entanto houve pessoas que pretendiam participar mas que não conseguiram ter lugar. Desta feita já existe uma nova data para a 2º edição deste workshop: 7 e 8 de Maio – Sábado e Domingo das 10h-13h e das 14h30 as 17h30. O local é o mesmo – COWORK na LxFactory.

AltLab – Lisbon HackerSpace has a new place

O AltLab é um “hacklab” em Lisboa, dedicado ao experimentalismo multidisciplinar em “digital media art”. Recentemente mudámos de localização, e o local não poderia ser mais “cool” e artístico: “Flying House Lisbon“.

 

Como se pode ler no site “A Flying House Lisboa é um espaço dedicado à música, às artes e ao intercâmbio cultural entre todos aqueles que estão ligados à arte urbana. Um espaço diferente, num lugar diferente.” e de facto mais diferente não poderia ser, no mesmo local mistura-se um bar-lounge, uma sala para pequenas refeições, ateliers de pintura e escultura, galeria de exposição, quartos para artistas em residência,  e agora também o nosso hackerspace !!

Sinceramente espero que este local permita criar algumas sinergias entre nós e alguns dos artistas para que possam nascer esculturas “vivas”, quadros generativos e muitas instalações interactivas.

Recordo que o AltLab reune “a porta aberta” todas as 3ª feiras apartir das 20h30 e qualquer pessoa é bem vinda para nos visitar e conhecer.

Apareçam, é muito próximo do aeroporto da Portela de de Figo Maduro por isso é só seguir os aviões !!! Ou ver no Google Maps ;)

AltLab is an “hacklab” situated in Lisbon, fully committed with multidisciplinary experimentalism in digital media art. Recently we moved to a new location, and it couldn’t be more cool and artistic: “Flying House Lisbon“.

As you may read in the website “Flying House Lisbon is a place dedicated to music, arts and culture exchange between everyone connected to urban arts. A different space in a diferent place.” in fact it couldn’t be otherwise because they have in the same place a lounge-bar, a room for small meals, workshops of painting and sculpture, art gallery, rooms for artists in residence,  and now our very own hackerspace !!

Hope this spot will bring some great synergies between us and the artists in residence to create some “living” sculptures, generative paintings and great interactive installations.

I recall that AltLab meets every Tuesday at 8:30pm and everyone is welcomed to visit and meet us.

Come on by, we are really close to Lisbon airport and Figo Maduro airport therefore just follow the planes !!! Or check Google Maps :P
